What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnosis is as simple as guided meditation. Scientific studies show that meditation works to rewire our conscious minds. Hypnosis puts the client in a suggestible state of mind which bypasses the critical factor, and allows for behavior modification. It is a great way to help people get over fears and anxiety.

A hypnotherapist is like a guide, helping you navigate your own subconscious mind.

Guided meditation with imagery and suggestions intended to rewire your subconscious mind for positive changes in your life is what we call therapeutic hypnosis, or hypnotherapy.

I’m going to demystify hypnosis, remove the “woo woo” reputation it has been given, and give you the science behind it.

Brainwaves are patterns of electrical activity occurring in the brain, and are associated with different states of consciousness.

Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta are our brainwave states listed in order of highest consciousness to lowest but they’re totally out of order as far as the Greek alphabet goes. Let’s break it down even more:

Gamma - Fastest brainwaves, measuring anywhere between 35 Hz - 100 Hz, and is considered to be “peak mental state”; associated with problem solving and intense focus.

Beta - Measuring anywhere between 13 Hz - 20 Hz; Awake, alert.

Alpha - Measuring anywhere between 8 Hz - 13 Hz; Daydream, meditation.

Theta - Measuring anywhere between 4 Hz - 8 Hz; Hypnosis, “twilight state”, (subconscious is wide open and accessible).

Delta - Slowest and lowest brainwaves, measuring below 4 Hz; Sleep.

Theta is the brainwave state we are in right before we fall asleep, and right before we wake up. It’s part of our naturally occurring brainwave cycle, and this is also known as the “hypnosis” state. It is when we are not quite asleep, but not fully awake and alert either, deeper than meditation or a daydream but not so deep you can’t be snapped out of it in an instant - that’s hypnosis, also known as someone being “in the zone” when intensely focused on one specific task. This is when a person is in Theta brainwaves, also known as being “on autopilot”, when the conscious mind isn’t really paying attention and the subconscious is steering. Theta state can only occur when our bodies are completely relaxed and at ease. Delta is our sleep state, where both our mind, and our body, are completely relaxed and at ease, with neither consciously functioning. Beyond delta, one ceases to have brain activity and would be essentially braindead.

And that, my friend, is the most simple way I can explain hypnosis. â€‹
